On the confusion of weight loss

The other day I went out for coffee with my mother.

I arrived early, so as I was waiting for mom to show up, I started looking around, and a board full of business cards caught my eye.

As I looked closer I saw a card for an interior designer, a couple cards for real estate agents… then dozens upon dozens of cards for health-related offers. The board was covered with the business cards of smiling-health professionals.

There were coaches and yoga instructors, nutritionists and diet experts, crossfit gyms and weight loss coaching, transformation specialists and holistic health gurus.

…It was so completely overwhelming…

There were so many people specializing in helping people with their health and wellness, and this can mean only one thing. So many OTHER people were looking for help in health and wellness.

I get why.. it’s confusing… or it’s been made to be confusing. There are so many options and ideas and approaches and promises. Yet it doesn’t have to be confusing at all.

Here’s my take:

  1.  What you put time into is where your true priorities can be found. If you have time to watch Game of Thrones, but no time to workout 3 times per week, then Game of Thrones is your priority, working out is not.

  2. Consistency, discipline, and restraint are not sexy words, but they’re what you need to truly change your body. Above everything else, it takes consistent effort.

  3. With that consistent effort you need to follow a set of rules. Rules that help guide you along your journey. Everyone will have slightly different rules, but I’d like to share mine, because I know they work, and I know you can follow them.

“Fast once OR twice a week for 24ish hours. On the other days eat responsibly. Weight train 2-5 times a week. Eat your protein. Be active.”

Why we hate the BMI

A new study adds to the growing evidence that an elevated BMI increases the risk of a heart attack in otherwise healthy people. In what has been called the largest study of its kind (data on over 500,000 people) researchers classified participants based on their body mass index (BMI), calculated as weight (kg) divided […]

How Many Calories can you Burn in a day?

Have you ever stopped to think that there might be an upper-limit to how many calories you can burn in a day? Basically a ‘ceiling rate’ at which we can burn through calories? Probably not, but don’t worry… I did for you! I’ve heard rumors of people eating well over 10,000 calories during a single […]

Reverse Taper Intermittent Fasting

The concept of the Reverse Taper Diet is still one of my favorite ideas. Without getting too technical, the concept is that you should be in your largest calorie deficit (eating the least amount of food) at the beginning of your diet, when you have the most fat to lose and thus the most fat […]

Fasting for Weight Loss – Setting the Record Straight

Paleo eating and vegan eating are the EXACT SAME THING. This is why any and all research on Paleo diets can be used for Vegan diets, and vice versa. It’s also why any personal experiences people have had with a Vegan diet can be directly applied to what you will probably experience with the Paleo […]
