How to get an awesome body

September 10, 2010 By Brad Pilon

The first step in having an awesome body is determining your goals. mr.strong

This is much harder then it sounds, but in order to OWN YOUR GOALS (a key part of being awesome) you have to know what they are first.

And here’s the trick. You have to pretend that they are all MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE.

Here’s an example.

Having a great bench press and having a massive chest CAN NOT be the same goal.

Neither can being healthy and having 6 pack abs,

(Now, In reality, they may in fact be related, but for the purpose of defining what is awesome for you….you need to decide.)

For instance:

If I told you that the incline fly was the world’s best exercise for building a thick, muscular chest, but it would DESTROY your bench press…You’d need to be able to decide which one is the most important to you.

If research came out tomorrow saying that for every month you spent with a body fat under 10% you lost a day of your life you’d need to be able to decide which one is really your goal.

Is having big muscles more or less important to you than long term health? Do you want to run really fast or really long? Do you care about how your body looks or do you want to be functional or good in a sport? Big Biceps or the Adonis Index? Exercise for weight loss, or Exercise for muscle growth?

Again, I know a lot of these things may be related, but to be true to yourself, you have to pretend they are not.

Because the only way to truly get an awesome body is by defining what an “awesome body’ means to YOU.

Do you want to be shredded OR do you want to run marathons?

Do you want to be thin OR do you want to weigh 115 pounds?

You have to really narrow in on your goals.

Then you have to OWN them.

If your number one health and fitness desire is to have a big bench press…when someone retorts with “yeah, but what can you squat?” you need to be 100% comfortable with the following answer:

I don’t care.

Because these are YOUR goals no theirs.

And people are going to try to sell you on their goals over and over, try to make you part of the crowd. Try to justify their wants and desires as being awesome by getting your approval (which oddly enough comes from convincing you that there goals should be your goals).

So what does OWNING your goals have to do with having an awesome body?

Simple.

Firstly, you’ve defined what awesome means to you.

Second you now have a clear definition to work towards – so you won’t fall prey to the ADD approach to training that is so popular these days

One day you are trying to perfect your form in Olympic lifts, then next day you are trying to run a marathon, then next day you are dieting to get a 6 pack, then next day you are overeating because you want to be big at all costs…etc etc.

The results of this ADD approach?  You don’t make any progress.

To get results you need to focus.

To focus you need to be happy with your goals.

To be happy with your goals you need to have truly defined your goals.

Once you have truly defined your goals you need to commit to being awesome at them.

Or, simply:

To get results you have to be awesome

That’s how you get an awesome body – by knowing what an awesome body is.

PS- (the rest – the process, becomes infinitely easier when you know exactly why you are following it…more on this next week)

Why we hate the BMI

A new study adds to the growing evidence that an elevated BMI increases the risk of a heart attack in otherwise healthy people. In what has been called the largest study of its kind (data on over 500,000 people) researchers classified participants based on their body mass index (BMI), calculated as weight (kg) divided […]

How Many Calories can you Burn in a day?

Have you ever stopped to think that there might be an upper-limit to how many calories you can burn in a day? Basically a ‘ceiling rate’ at which we can burn through calories? Probably not, but don’t worry… I did for you! I’ve heard rumors of people eating well over 10,000 calories during a single […]

Reverse Taper Intermittent Fasting

The concept of the Reverse Taper Diet is still one of my favorite ideas. Without getting too technical, the concept is that you should be in your largest calorie deficit (eating the least amount of food) at the beginning of your diet, when you have the most fat to lose and thus the most fat […]
