Did you know Apple Cider can prevent fat gain?
And I don’t mean Apple Cider Vinegar (…yuck!)
I’m talking about delicious Apple Cider.
Here in the United States and Canada, Apple Cider is basically apple juice that has not been filtered to remove all the apple pulp. Because it’s not filtered, cider contains two to four times more of something called “polyphenols” than the crappy apple juice you get in the grocery store.
Let me tell you why that’s amazing news for you!!
For one, apple polyphenols have been found to block the formation of new body fat, and have been studied for their weight reducing properties especially your visceral (belly) fat.
Polyphenols are currently being studied for their role in inhibiting an enzyme called Fatty Acid Synthase (FAS)- a key enzyme involved in the formation of new body fat that It is also involved in energy metabolism and appetite regulation.
It is really only found in two major spots: your liver and your fat cells, and is tightly regulated by your diet. Fasting suppresses it, while overeating increases it. Inhibiting FAS activity can decrease the formation of new fat and even lead to fat loss (albeit in animals).
Which is great news since the polyphenols in apples have been shown to be able to block the activity of FAS.
Blocking the activity of FAS not only decreases the creation of new fat, but also leads to a reduction in hunger, and causes weight loss in animal models.
As amazing as this sounds, it gets better…
Not only do the polyphenols from apple cider block the activity of FAS, they can also protect you from endotoxins – poisons that are released by the bacteria in your gut when you eat the wrong foods.
You’ve probably heard by now that your gut bacteria is important to your health. So far so good. What you may not know is that your gut bacteria are constantly under attack, and not just from your diet.
Pollution, antibiotics, pesticides, and insecticides are all examples of environmental factors that can damage the health of your gut bacteria.
Like it or not, you are exposed to these environmental factors every day, all day.
And when your gut bacteria is thrown out of balance it releases toxins.
They’re called endotoxins, and when they enter your body very bad things happen…
Weight gain, insulin resistance, and depression have all been linked to endotoxins.
Now here’s the good news. It just so happens that many of the polyphenols found in apples — and in apple cider — combat the negative impact of endotoxins.
If you are concerned about your weight, the health of your gut bacteria and the negative effects of endotoxins, drink a glass tor two of apple cider per day. […I like mine hot with cinnamon and nutmeg…]
I stumbled on this line of scientific studies while researching my brand new book: Good Belly, Bad Belly. It’s full of neat tricks on how to improve your gut health instantly — like how to transform the starch in potatoes and rice into a virtual superfood that inhibits the toxins in your gut and even prevents weight gain. And don’t worry, as usual I explain all the latest science behind these tips in a simple and easy-to-understand format.
Researching and writing Good Belly, Bad Belly was an eye-opening experience for me. I think you’ll enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed creating it. And if you apply the tips and tricks in the book, just a few additions to your daily diet will give you a noticeable improvement in your energy, weight, and even your health markers next time you see your doc.
