Simple Metabolism Analogy

February 28, 2011 By Brad Pilon

Metabolism and weight loss need not be complex theory – however I know from experience that if you focus on the little things, it can become a scary, daunting concept.

However, If you let yourself get a little creative with an analogy it can become rather simple:

Stupid Simple Metabolism

We are all magical Balloons.

We have a slow leak, but we do not burst (that’s the magic part).

Now, because of this leak we constantly need to add air to our balloons, so all of our balloons are all attached to bicycle pumps. We can control how much air is being pushed in, however many of us are pushing in way more air then can possibly escape through the leak. (This is our ‘calories in’)

As a result, we grow and and we grow, but thanks to magic – we don’t burst.

The leak can slow down or speed up a little, but this is completely dependent on how much air is being forced in, but it won’t ever tear or rupture..it is what it is, a slow steady leak. (This is our ‘calories out’)

So our job is to manage the size of the balloon. We can’t really alter the size of the leak to any truly significant degree, but we do have complete control over the the amount of air coming in.

If you think of metabolism and weight gain as magical balloon with a slow leak, it becomes a pretty simple concept.

When the balloon gets to big, stop putting air in and let the leak take care of the amount of air in the balloon.

I know – it’s an odd analogy – but it helps me when I start letting things get to complicated.

Why we hate the BMI

A new study adds to the growing evidence that an elevated BMI increases the risk of a heart attack in otherwise healthy people. In what has been called the largest study of its kind (data on over 500,000 people) researchers classified participants based on their body mass index (BMI), calculated as weight (kg) divided […]

How Many Calories can you Burn in a day?

Have you ever stopped to think that there might be an upper-limit to how many calories you can burn in a day? Basically a ‘ceiling rate’ at which we can burn through calories? Probably not, but don’t worry… I did for you! I’ve heard rumors of people eating well over 10,000 calories during a single […]

Reverse Taper Intermittent Fasting

The concept of the Reverse Taper Diet is still one of my favorite ideas. Without getting too technical, the concept is that you should be in your largest calorie deficit (eating the least amount of food) at the beginning of your diet, when you have the most fat to lose and thus the most fat […]
