Hormones and your Health

Here’s the classic way of thinking about hormones.

  • We know of all the hormones in the body.
  • We know what all the hormones in our bodies do.

Now here’s the truth…

We are discovering new hormones and signaling molecules every day. We are also discovering new roles for hormones every day.

It is true that your hormones regulate the functions in your body, but they do so in concert, with dozens if not hundreds acting together to cause a certain effect, and to regulate and guide that particular effect.

In this way you can picture your hormones and the roles they play in your body like a spider web…

With all the hormones working together, depending on each other while at the same time creating checks and balances that allow for an intricate design to take….This design being your metabolism.

The thought that we can decide health or a health-outcome by any one hormone is ludicrous.

Don’t get caught up in the thinking that there are ‘good’ and ‘bad’ hormones in your body…It doesn’t matter if we’re talking fat loss, muscle building or disease prevention.

They all work together and they all serve a purpose.

Hi Brad, that’s why when some time ago you asked about peoples thoughts on Steriod use i mentioned that i thought the hysteria here in the US was a shame, because it’s basically held back research on hormone therapy, and how to optimize its benefits, along with minimizing it’s negatives

Great post yet again Brad. I was wondering what you recommend in terms of diet/exercise for someone who is 6?0 in the low 160s but does not have fully visible abs (prob. 12-14% bf). Would you recommend to try to lose fat through caloric restriction, gain muscle through lifting? Do both simultaneously? Lift for a few months before losing the fat? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. I love your no BS approach to dieting and fitness.

  4. Brad,

It’s interesting that people vilify certain hormones for certain negative effects, while ignoring other positive effects. For example, we condemn the hunger hormone ghrelin for its stimulation of hunger and forget that in the state of hunger or fasting it stimulates the release of growth hormone. The same can be said of the two faces of insulin.

Another great post — always helpful in stimulating further thoughts on things.

I think a photo of you is used to sell some products. I’m not sure it’s you, but it looks like you to me. Scroll down and take a look at this website:

    http://www.getting-ripped-fast.com/index-vc.php

Supposedly you bought a bottle of acai detox and a bottle of cleanse extreme to get a ripped body. Under the name Jackmann you post the following comment: “OK so I tried this stuff, Seems to work pretty well. Here;s a before and after “. And then there’s this picture.

As I said, I’m not 100% sure it’s you. But thought you might wanna know. Thanks for a great blog!

  6. Don’t you think another issue of overeating is that people are eating nutritionally deficient foods that are processed and thus not getting any real micronutrition so they have cravings due to nutritional deficiencies?

  7. Brad Pilon says:

No not really. It’s a theory, but one that is unproven…I am not aware that there is any proof that lack of micronutrition causes cravings due to nutritional deficiencies.
