How Much Protein

Protein Intake and Body Weight

December 20, 2017 By Brad Pilon

I do not understand the idea of prescribing protein intake based on body weight. It makes no sense to me. Prescribing protein intake in such a manner suggests that the protein needs of a 28 year old 6’4” man weighing 220 pounds with 10% body fat is the same as a protein needs of a 28 year old 5’6” tall women weighing 220 pounds with 50% body fat. This then suggests … [Read more...] about Protein Intake and Body Weight

Drinking Protein during Workouts

September 24, 2009 By Brad Pilon

Wish I had included this quote in 'How Much Protein': Finally, research published in 2008 by Beelen et al [Beelen M, 2008] suggests that the effect that eating protein during a workout has on protein synthesis is no different then the effect that the workout alone has when you continue to measure after 9 hour of recovery. Bottom line, it's your workouts, and how well they are … [Read more...] about Drinking Protein during Workouts

Eat More Protein to Build More Muscle

February 23, 2009 By Brad Pilon

"Eat big to get big. Eat protein to build more muscle" At the surface, this makes sense. After all it works for our fat right? The more calories we eat the bigger our fat gets, so it makes some sort of sense that the more protein we eat the bigger our muscles will get. What we are describing is a basic dose-response relationship. A very simplified version of a … [Read more...] about Eat More Protein to Build More Muscle

“Non-Denatured” Protein

July 13, 2007 By Brad Pilon

Just finished having an interesting conversation about denatured proteins. Apparently, some supplement companies are marketing their protein powders as "non-denatured", and are implying that their competitors are selling denatured (and therefore useless) protein. The theory is that our bodies cannot absorb denatured proteins. Unfortunately, this is just wrong. Our … [Read more...] about “Non-Denatured” Protein

Why we hate the BMI

A new study adds to the growing evidence that an elevated BMI increases the risk of a heart attack in otherwise healthy people. In what has been called the largest study of its kind (data on over 500,000 people) researchers classified participants based on their body mass index (BMI), calculated as weight (kg) divided […]

How Many Calories can you Burn in a day?

Have you ever stopped to think that there might be an upper-limit to human metabolism? Basically a ‘ceiling rate’ at which we can burn through calories? Probably not, but don’t worry… I did for you! I’ve heard rumors of people eating well over 10,000 calories during a single cheat day, or even every day during […]

Reverse Taper Intermittent Fasting

The concept of the Reverse Taper Diet is still one of my favorite ideas. Without getting too technical, the concept is that you should be in your largest calorie deficit (eating the least amount of food) at the beginning of your diet, when you have the most fat to lose and thus the most fat […]

Fasting for Weight Loss – Setting the Record Straight

Paleo eating and vegan eating are the EXACT SAME THING. This is why any and all research on Paleo diets can be used for Vegan diets, and vice versa. It’s also why any personal experiences people have had with a Vegan diet can be directly applied to what you will probably experience with the Paleo […]
