You are going to gain weight. As you are pregnant your body, your hormones, your genes, EVERYTHING is changing.

You are not flabby and gross. You are pregnant. Easy for me to say (being a man) but its true.

Embrace it. Even if you have 3 kids (and live to 80) you will spend less than 3% of your ENTIRE life being pregnant...might as well try to enjoy it!

Brad,
I'm wondering if you think the human body changes during pregnancy, so that you can gain weight at a calorie level that used to be perfect to maintain. I am now pregnant, and gaining a lot of weight even though I'm working out and watching my calories (dr says 2200/day). I'm wondering if this is some freak incident or if it's because I'm not working out as hard because I'm so nauseous. I'm also eating a lot more carbs, but I know you don't think that matters (assuming we keep calories constant). I'm getting so frustrated with this weight gain because I'm normally a thin person and now I'm feeling flabby and gross. I, of course, want a healthy baby, so I'll deal with the weight gain. It'll be nice to know that this is maybe a survival mechanism. Can't wait to do ESE in 6 months!

Found your blog through Zen Habits. Not to contradict the master here, but I guess I would have added, or even substituted "get out more." That's what worked for me.

After being a couch potato for over 25 years, my wife's health problems forced me into being a caregiver. For her sake, and for mine, I decided I better take care of myself as well - I started walking - then, to get my heart rate up, I started looking for residential hills to climb (how dumb is that!) - discovered a hiking trail at the top of one of those hills - and, in the past year, I have lost 60 pounds - through hiking, just eating smarter, and maybe some stress as well (that's the BAD way to lose weight).

At the age of 59, I'll never get great abs - it's not something I even think about - but I am doing things I never did, or thought I could do - I am trying to eat smart while enjoying food - and trying to make up for the 30 years I coasted through marriage and work.

Sadly, since our beautiful Angeles National Forest, here in So Calif, burned so badly over the past 2 weeks, I have lost many wonderful places to hike. Truly a terrible loss.

Hey Brad,

Based on this post, would you still rate the top three <a href="http://eatstopeat.com/diet-books/diet-books.html" rel="nofollow">diet books</a> the way you did in your <a href="http://eatstopeat.com/diet-books/diet-books.html" rel="nofollow">diet books</a> article?

Hey Brad. I'm so upset I decided to buy Eat Stop Eat, read it and re-read it and put it into practice! It was the worst thing I've done in a very long time. Now I can't read my muscle/fitness magazines, listen to fitness gurus or watch people struggling with a food addiction without getting angry at the lies they tell and are told (ok, so maybe you didn't expect that to be the reason for my being upset lol).

I just get so disappointed watching people I love stressing over food choices while getting fatter. Then they ask me how I've reduced my body fat percentage to 10% (and falling!) while gaining overall weight. I tell them I fast twice a week and don't stress over what I eat the rest of the time and they just plain don't believe me. I explain why it works and they look at me like I'm from another planet. I know everyone has their journey, but it hurts to see them go through it.

As kids, my parents made us fast twice a week for religious reasons, but when I left home I didn't keep to it because of all the false info out there. Seems my parents were right :)

To this article: I find my magazines inspire me while I just gloss over the nutrition "information", but there are a few blogs I need to declutter from my RSS (not this one!). Thanks.

Brad,

I struggle with this every morning. So many emails saying do this and not that...

In the end, it's all very simple but the action required is the toughest part. Mankind is lazy and is always looking for the easiest route. Cut the junk and just take action!

Remember that documenteries HAVE to be contraversial, HAVE to be counter culture and HAVE to be shocking to sell. Imagine the documentary Montasanto - "The feel good food company"...it just wouldn't fly.

Food gone toxic, maybe, but you have no way of knowing whether or not what helped you was simply eating less.

In my eyes the leading health and longevity gurus are the group of people who are living past 100, who share no dietary secretes or commonalities and certainly DO NOT share some secret supplement regimen. In fact, as Dr. Aubrey De Grey pointed out, what they do share is a laid back attitude and a happy demeanor (I'm paraphrasing).

I think my point is we can all get the same, if not better results with half the thought and a quarter of the stress.
