The miracle of our bodies is that they come with their own giant rechargeable batteries.
You may know of these batteries as “fat cells”.
This is where we store energy for use later.
Brilliant design.
The only issue is, in order for these batteries to work optimally, they need to be drained every once-in-a-while.
If you don’t drain them, they start to cause problems (just like real batteries).
The best way to drain them?
Stop filling them ALL THE TIME.
Use them up a bit…
Sure, you might end up filling them up again…
But that’s how they were designed to work.
store a little burn a little.
NOT
STORE EVERYTHING.
Nobody needs to carry around 80,000 Calories worth of stored energy, but that’s what 50-ish pounds of body fat is…
Don’t be afraid to use the energy you already have (body fat) instead of going out and getting more (food).
A break from eating every once in a while, it does a body good.

damn right
I love your analogies! They break through all the science speak so many bloggers are in love with by painting an accessible picture of what’s happening in our bodies. Thanks Brad!
Isnt 50 pounds of fat =175,000 calories? 3,500 cals / pound
On the TV yesterday, an obese person (who later died after gastric bypass surgery) stated that they force themselves to eat even if they aren’t that hungry because they “know they have to eat something.”
I slapped my forehead a bajillion times.

I’ll be at Williams on Wednesday with John, charging my batteries with multiple cookies and
an egg wrap.
Yep, I missed a 1 in front…good catch.

OK, but what about this evolutionary-fitness bs, that the human species stayed alived because we can store the energy in out fat cells and the our body use it when there is no other choice (glycogen, muscle)
If a fat person and skinny person were stranded without food, who would live longer, given that the fat person has more of an energy store?
Hi!
Great comparison. This is the way I´m going to think from now on. I always use to nag about this to my kids regarding their cellphones but never used on myself. Thank´s a lot!
Interesting question…
Assuming everything else is equal, no medical issues…and they both have next to zero foods, and no predators they have to run from…and they have just enough food to keep basic micronutrient needs going…fat person.
Then again, if they’re stranded on the same island, then the answer is whomever is hungrier, meaner, and has the bigger rock in their hand
But consider this, even a moderately lean person (180 pound male at 12-15% body fat) has enough stored energy for around a month, providing they’re not too busy running away from big hungry things…
BP
I would say the skinnier person would win. “No Food” is always temporary when talking about stranded humans. The fat person couldn’t move fast enough to snatch whatever the skinny person already grasped in his/her mouth.
If it was a desert island, I hear that fat is less dense than water, so the Fat person could set themselves to see without wasting energy building a boat
Hey Brad,
Check out this old article/ad – looks like wheaties did not like the fact that Americans we’re using their battery power and put out propagnada to put a stop to it.

About skipping a meal and lowering calories to lose weight. Maybe they knew a little something in 1943. Nice!
Awe crap, the link didn’t come out right – page 17 bottom right hand corner if anyone is interested.
