In Your Face Fitness: Jillian Michaels kettle bell DVD sounds a thud latimes.com

This one line reminds me a bit of the Coca-Cola “Vitamin Water Defense” of (paraphrasing) “no intelligent person would think this drink is good for you”.

By making the claim that Jillian is ‘an actress playing a fitness trainer ‘(a claim made by the author, NOT Jillian) it does really remove any accountability and responsibility away from Jillian…

So obviously this comment probably made Jillian angry, it’s actually not a totally bad thought..kinda like being a doctor but also playing one on TV…you get to play doctor without the responsibility. More a thought then anything else, but nonetheless.

Perhaps this is the direction this industry is headed in…after all, have we ever really seen any accountability from diet gurus?

As an update Jillian has responded to this article (The original not mine) with the following:

“Apparently I’m an actress. Shame on the Los Angeles Times for saying I’m a fraud and not a trainer. I currently own two certifications, one of which doesn’t expire. I developed my own continuing education program for trainers, with sports medicine doctors. I’ve been a trainer since I was 17 years old for 19 years.”

- Good for her for sticking up for herself. Regardless of whether or not her ‘form is right’ on her swings, the actress comment was..well..mean.

This is a great article – until I got to the point where the author talks about slowing down your metabolism by eating too little. No wonder people over eat, they are worried if they don’t eat their metabolism will be gone and they will really be fat and waste away or look like a marathon runner!

Also, I just saw Bob from The Biggest Loser on Rachel Ray (my wife is trying to drive home a point to me) talking about how breakfast is the most important meal and skipping it will kill your metabolism. Of course he was promoting his new deal with Kellogg’s!

Just my opinion, but there should be some accountability to the people ‘endorsing’ products

Bob should be accountable for the claims being made (again just my personal opinion, but making the endorser’s accountable would be a large step towards cleaning up this industry)

It seems as if certain people’s bank accounts are more protected than most people’s lives. Sad.

I wonder if these “trainers” actually KNOW they are giving false information or if they are just REGURGITATING the same thing that everyone else does?

I must say, if it weren’t for this blog, ESE, and one I found on BB.com, I would be forever trying to lose weight by eating 6 meals a day. In fact, these meals wouldn’t be just an apple or something like that…they would be a little bit of protein, little carbs, and little fat – mini-meals if you will!!

Geese….no wonder the diet industry is a multibillion dollar entity!!!

What do you thnk Brad – do they know? Heck, even Dr.s are saying this stuff.

When I saw her form with kettlebells, it did make my head hurt a bit, but that was probably the memory of my trainer (when I did my PT cert.) yelling ‘NEUTRAL SPINE! KEEP YOUR SPINE IN NEUTRAL POSITION, SARA’. He may have even smacked me on the back of the head (ex. professional athlete) just to make sure it sunk in. Jillians form is not just a little bad, but really very bad. It pains me, the supplement whoring and the terrible DVD’s because I used to think she was quite good.

  6. Wood says:

Is it normal, that on fasting days i feel incredible pump in my muscles?

  7. Brad Pilon says:

I really don’t know anything about kettlebell form, but you are def not the first person to suggest her form is a more than a little off.

Not sure, but Get the same thing.

  9. Mike Navin says:

Funny timing on the “feeling an extra pump on fasting days” comment as I was noticing that same thing yesterday.

  10. GregorB says:

I have not seen this DVD and will not comment on Jillian’s form however I have noticed that the Biggest Loser contestants have used Kettlebells with horrible form under the supervision of both Bob and Jillian on that program.

KBs are great but also pretty damn dangerous if not used with perfect form, every one interested in learning should either check out a class or the books/DVDs available through RKC, Spend time on the drills w/o a kettle bell in your hands first.

I think the article makes a pretty good point. Why would folks turn to someone who is unqualified to learn such a specified and technical skill like KBs or Yoga?

    Brad, have You seen this?

Fasting on T-nation. WTF I think you should invent some supplement not to lose muscle while fasting too (err… i meant to earn more money :-) )

  12. Brad Pilon says:

I was approached to do this awhile a go.

    I passed.

keeping you guys happy is costing me money ;)

I never feel a drop in energy or ability on fasting days, one of which was 48 hrs. I’ve done 17 thus far and intend to make it part of my M.O. In fact the working out kills any hunger I might be feeling, which is never much. But afterwards I feel totally energized.
