Back in 1995 the Buffalo Bills had just lost 4 Super Bowls in a row, Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise was on repeat on every FM radio station in North America and The Zone was just hitting book shelves.
The Zone was one of the first books to promote the need to ‘control’ insulin levels and keep them ‘normal’ a way to lose body fat. For the rest of the 90′s and even into the early 2000′s, having low insulin levels was thought of as the key to losing body fat.
It’s now 2009.
The Bills have never been back to the Super Bowl, Coolio is part of Celebrity Big Brother, and we’re now starting to figure out that ‘controlling’ insulin levels may not be the secret to fat loss that we once thought it was.
As it turns out, Growth Hormone may play an even bigger role in fat loss than we ever expected.
Check out this video to learn more about the role of GH in Fat Loss.

Hey Brad, another great short-and-to-the-point instructional, thanks!
BTW, I recently posted on my blog regarding my 4 months report with mini-fasts a la ESE. Some of the blog visitors here might be interested to read same. Here’s the link:

Thanks for the great work, Brad!

Hey Brad, I’ve got a quick question for you… I’ve been getting tremendous results from following Eat Stop Eat in the last 8 weeks, but I now have to take a week off from workouts to allow for more recovery… Do I fast in the week off period as well? Even though there is no exercise to maintain the muscle? Or do you recommend fasting with light body weight activity that wouldn’t harm recovery?
Brad,
I was wondering if I could get your response to this:

(via Oct. 28th Men’s Health Nutrition bulletin).

Thanks for your insightful videos and blog.

GH is the secret?
Guitar Hero to lose fat! YES!!!
Hi Brad
On fasting days, I find that I am not very thirsty. I drink some water and herbal tea, but not nearly the amount that I would consume on a non-fasting day. Is this OK? Or would I have better results (weight loss and muscle gain) drinking more water while fasting?
Thanks Again

Lani,
Great info..thanks for the link.

Dan,
Typically press release meant to stir up controversy by reporting a lifestyle correlation as cause and effect.
So my thoughts would be best summed up as “good grief”

Red Lefty,
The cure to obesity? 20 minutes of rocking out to Lamb of God on Guitar Hero. Take twice daily.
(for even faster results, add more cow bell)

KB,
I’d go with what you are comfortable with. There is not reason to restrict fluids, but no reason to overdo it either.

Brad,
An article on Insulin, Leptin and Blood Sugar was recently posted on Natural News (http://www.naturalnews.com/025405.html). In the sections on Blood Sugar 101, et. al. the role of insulin is described in some detail, along with mentioning glucagon, but no growth hormone (GH). Most of the insulin description appears to parallel the ESE information such as the problem with constantly high levels of insulin. I would be interested in your take on the article, in general, and the absence of GH tie-in, in particular.
I’m beginning the sixth week of my ESE experiment (2×24 hour fasts per week) and have found “doing nothing” to be the best and most reasonable approach to weight loss I’ve tried. I’m looking forward to your next book and keep the videos coming.

Hi King,
I haven’t had time to read the full article yet, but I can tell you that any attempt to explain the bodies control of blood sugar that does not include the role of GH is an incomplete explanation.

Brad,
When the Metallica version of GH comes out I should be contest-ready bodyfat in just weeks!
@Brad Pilon
Brad,
Great response–seemed soo thin to me. This is the same logic that gives us “skipping breakfast will make you fat”.
…only if that leads to eating too many calories!
Thanks.

Dan,
Exactly! Association versus Causality at its worst.

[...] it work? On two principles. First, when you go a short amount of time without eating, your insulin lowers and growth hormone rises. The combination of the two causes you to specifically burn your fat stores. So, when you do burn [...]
