The Office

It’s time to do everyone at your work a GIANT favor.

It’s time to get rid of “Cookie Tuesdays” and “Cake Thursdays”

It’s also time to get rid of the “Cookies and treats at every meeting” mentality.

You CAN make it through an hour meeting without needing cookies…

(Besides..conspiracy theorists think the cookies are just there to keep you sedated)

If you are going to win this battle against obesity…then it’s not a war you can only fight at home.

You have to take it to the office too.

And remember, I’m all for eating the foods you love…but it all has to be within the realm of eating less.

You CAN have cake while dieting..just not at every meeting.

Here’s my final thought from back when I worked in an office that was meeting crazy

1. You shouldn’t have to bribe your employees to go to a meeting

2. The meetings shouldn’t be any longer than they need to be…so you really shouldn’t have to nourish your employees.

3. If you have employees who are trying to lose weight, having treats can be just as offensive as NOT having treats. Especially when you employees try to guild trip each other into eating.

and finally

4. Eat Stop Eat. There’s a LOT of us out there now (we’re the ones losing all that weight) …we may not tell you, but we might be fasting…so be nice.

    Brad,

You just reminded me of those office meetings at around 2 pm when digestion kicks in and they would always have donuts …I was trying hard to keep my eyes open for the rest of the meeting, feeling sooo sleepy. So that’s another good reason to skip on those..

    Happy to work from home.
    ciao ciao.

    Brad,

I did a lot of work in Norway and a common theme is “Cake Fridays”. Interestingly (but purely anecdotal) I think they eat less cake at other times in the week because they don’t want to spoil Friday’s treat. Most of the Norwegians I asked told me that Friday lunchtime was the only time they had cake (or pretty much any sweet treat) the whole week.

I completely agree that treats at every meeting is a bad idea but is it possible that infrequent treats might even be beneficial?

Treats and favorites taste better when you’re not ingesting them at every possible opportunity anyway. It teaches you to truly savor those things when you do partake and enjoy them, as opposed to just having it be another forgettable gorging on the path to an expanding waistline.

My work schedule is great for this.

No one ever bothers me to go eat, (because I hide in an office half of the day).

But I only work 4 days a week.

I’ve actually been meaning to get your take on this Brad.

Monday-Thursday I eat once a day. At 5pm. I eat until I am full (usually about 2400 cals), and then I’m not hungry again until 5pm the next day.

Friday-Sunday I’m home, and not distracted so all bets are off and I eat within reason/junk food if I want it.

In essence I guess I’m doing 4 – 24 hour fasting periods from Monday-Thursday, and it might seem excessive, but it really doesn’t bother me at all.

In fact, I don’t have GI problems anymore and I feel so much better. I look forward to my 5pm meals and it actually helps get me through the day a bit faster.

Of course I can’t imagine you would recommend this, as it does go beyond the 2- 24 hour fasts a week. But It’s really convenient, and I’m healthier, stronger, and in way better shape than I’ve ever been.

I’m fasting today and that worked really well with bicycle commuting. No worrying about what to take for lunch and how to fit it in my bag.

    Then this email comes through:
“In honor of the first warm day this spring. And in recognition of a busy week with lots going on, Katie will be making a trip to Dairy Queen this afternoon (around 2:30ish).

Thanks for the extra hours and hard work!”

The extra hours and hard work already somewhat interrupt my exercise and good eating plan (stress, late nights, etc.) and now add DQ to the mix? No thanks. Wish they would find some other way to reward me…

Wish I could send this reply:
“Thank you for the offer, however I must decline. As the stress and sleep deprivation of the extra hours and hard work have already caused me to gain 5 lb, I can’t really afford to add ice cream to that mix.”

Brad — thanks for all of your insights. In all the diet/workout chatter out there, you’re the one I’m hearing most loudly.
