I kinda liked those updates. Thanks for that.
Hi Brad
Are both of these correct? Short term fasting induces insulin resistance and
Short term overeating induces insulin resistance in fat cells
Thanks
Geoff
Hi Geoff
Yes but taken out of context this could seem entirely different from the reality.
You become insulin resistant ACUTELY during your fast DUE TO THE FACT that you have elevated blood Fatty acids which are being burned as a fuel. Since you are using Fatty Acids as a fuel, and have low insulin and no spikes in blood sugar…you have no reason during this period to be ‘insulin sensitive’.
If you were to fast, but have your fat burning ‘blocked’ then you would see no insulin resistance…so the resistance is an ACUTE by product of releaseing body fat to be burned as fuel.
Even with this the idea of being insulin resistance during your fast can only happen in a laboratory setting.
After all, the only time you can have HIGH insulin DURING a fast is in a laboratory setting when you are injected with insulin. In normal fasting, you have high insulin once you are done your fast, FFA’s are lowering and blood sugar is increasing.
On the other hand, the insulin resistance that occurs during overeating is another story. This is chronic and longer term.
Very different.
